Diabetic Foot

Description

Diabetes is a chronic disease, which damages a variety of body systems and functions, such as blood pressure and insulin production, and holds potentially serious consequences for the skin as well. People with diabetes are at risk of nerve damage (neuropathy) and problems with the blood supply to their feet (ischemia). Consequently, sensitivity in the surface of the skin becomes impaired, leaving diabetics prone to injuries they may not feel. Left unchecked, wounds can quickly deteriorate into ulcers and even lead to the necessity for limb amputations. It is therefore important to keep the skin of the feet whole and to prevent the appearance of cracks, which may serve as a port of entry to infections and cause deterioration and complications

Symptoms

  • Vulnerability to accelerated and excessive dryness resulting from skin barrier dysfunction
  • Severe cracking which reaches chronic proportions due to lack of preventive hydration treatment
  • Bleeding cracks, resulting from the scratching of itchy skin
  • Cuts, lesions and other wounds on the foot that become chronic and ulcerated and do not undergo
  • a natural healing process

Treatment

  • One of the primary prevention protocols for controlling diabetic symptoms is ongoing foot healthcare
  • Nails need to be properly trimmed and calloused skin removed
  • Feet should be thoroughly moisturized daily so as to prevent the development of ulcers
  • a natural healing process
